The President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek will pay an official visit to Malta on Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 January 2011.

EP President Buzek will hold meetings with the Speaker of the House of Representatives Michael Frendo, the President of Malta Dr. George Abela and Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

President Buzek will address the Maltese Parliament, hold an exchange of views with the Maltese Foreign and European Affairs Committee and hold a meeting with the leader of the opposition Joseph Muscat.

The President will also visit the Balzan Open Immigration Centre and hold a series of meetings with civil society.

Speaking ahead of the visit, European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek said:

"Malta and Maltese MEPs punch above their weight.  Malta was amongst the last EU Member States to enter recession and amongst the first to emerge, something the Maltese government and citizens can be proud of.  We face common challenges - rising international food and oil prices, immigration, climate change, energy security. Malta's concerns are Europe's concerns."
