Europe Day 2010 events - Screening of the LUX09 Cinema Prize finalist movies(03-05/05/2010)
As part of the activities organised to mark Europe Day 2010, the European Parliament Office in Valletta hosted a 3-day event at Europe House whereby the 3 finalist movies of the Lux09 Cinema Prize were screened.
The programme was as follows:
Tuesday 4th May
Eastern Plays deals with issues of intolerance. The movie was in Bulgarian, Turkish and English with English Subtitles.
Wednesday 5th May
Sturm is about corruption when dealing with Crimes against Humanity. The movie was in Serbian, German and English with English and French subtitles.
Thursday 6th May
Welcome (the winner of the LUX09 Cinema Prize) is about Irregular Migration. The movie was French with English and German subtitles
Proper advertising through print media but mainly through Facebook secured a very good public participation including students, film enthusiasts and general public. A number of cinema-related NGO's (Kinemastik, Malta Cine Circle and the Malta University Film Club) as well as MediaDesk Malta also helped out in publicising the event and were asked to circulate the details with their members. Posters were put at the University of Malta as well as St. James Cavalier, Centre for Creativity.
Before each film showing, a two-minute introduction about the Prize and the main aims which the EP is trying to achieve (promoting culture and diversity, getting a narrative of Europe through the eyes of artists etc.) was given to the audience. The conference hall at Europe House, approximately fitting 80 people was appropriately arranged in a cinema-style setting. Attendance was high in all 3 days with an average of about 70 people on the first 2 days and over 90 on the third and final night.
After each screening light refreshments were served on the terrace overlooking the Grand Harbour. An informal discussion was held there where the guests met with EP staff to discuss the films, funds available for movie-making, the purpose of Europe House as well as the activities it organises.
