  • Article - Environment Committee backs "roadmap" to low carbon economy

    As reserves of fossil fuels decline and the world tries to tackle the problems of greenhouse gases, the EU wants to shift to a low carbon economy. On Tuesday MEPs on the Environment Committee called for improvements to the emissions trading system (ETS) to help meet EU targets for a minimum reduction of 80% in CO2 emissions by 2050.

  • Article - EU urged to do more to eradicate violence against women and the young

    The EP is calling on the Commission and member states to do more to tackle violence against women and young people. Up to a quarter of women and young people in Europe are estimated to have experienced physical violence. Today the EP voted in favour of a report arguing for more action and for more support for the Daphne programme, the only EU programme seeking to combat violence against children, young people and women.

  • Article - "Women should play a more prominent role in peace negotiations"

    EU support in peace processes should be made conditional on women participating in negotiations. That is one of the conclusions of a report on women's situation in war by Romanian Liberal Norica Nicolai. The report proposes several measures to help reinforce the position of women in war-torn countries and to reduce sexual violence against them. The report will be voted on Thursday.

    MEPs singled out employment and the relaunch of the economy as being vital to the EU's future in a debate about the results of Monday's European Council meeting. Commission President José Manuel Barroso and EU Council President Herman Van Rompuy came under fire from MEPs across the political spectrum for failing to do enough to kick-start Europe's economy and help create jobs.

  • Article - Iran nuclear crisis: "negotiations only alternative to war"

    The EU agreed last week on sanctions on oil imported from Iran to force the country back to the negotiating table and prevent it from developing nuclear weapons. As MEPs prepared to discuss the issue, we spoke to Tarja Cronberg, chair of the EP delegation for relations with Iran. The Finnish Green stressed the need for negotiations: "The problem is that the EU mistrusts the Iranians and the Iranians mistrust the Europeans, but it is necessary because the alternative is war."

  • Article - Cracking down on doping, violence in sports stadia

    While promoting sports is mainly up to individual countries, the EU should initiate measures against doping, match-fixing and violence in sports stadia, Spanish Christian Democrat Santiago Fisas Ayxela says in a report, to be debated Wednesday and voted Thursday in plenary in Brussels.

    In the wake of last week's signature of the ACTA Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement by 22 EU countries and EU representatives, public interest has turned to the role of the European Parliament. The EP cannot change the text of the agreement, Chair of the International Trade Committe Vital Moreira explains, it can say yes or no, withhold agreement it or ask the Court of Justice to check it.

    The financial crisis continued to dominate as MEPs gave their feedback on the fiscal union summit that took place 30 January. They also discussed the sanctions against Iran approved by Council on 23 January in question time with High Representative Catherine Ashton as well as other foreign policy issues.

    In the wake of the financial crisis several euro zone countries are having to pay dramatically higher interest rates to borrow on international markets. Last year, the European Commission published a green paper looking at the possibility of issuing to help struggling euro zone members finance debt, by offering safe investment opportunities for investors. MEPs were scheduled to debate the issue on Thursday but the it has been postponed until the next plenary session later in February.

    Attending an EU summit for the first time as EP President, Martin Schulz Monday told leaders that the European Parliament must be involved in decisions on resolving the euro crisis. He also warned that austerity measures alone are not sufficient to solve Europe's problems but must be accompanied by investment in growth and jobs.

    The EU's student and teacher exchange programme, named after the Dutch philosopher Erasmus, celebrates its silver jubilee this year. Since its launch in the late 80's, nearly 3 million students and teachers have been able to study and work abroad with the help of Erasmus grants.

    On 13 January, the Italian cruise ship, Costa Concordia, ran aground after hitting a reef off Isola del Giglio, Italy, with more than 4,000 passengers and crew on board. With 16 confirmed deaths and more than 20 people still missing, the human tragedy may be followed by an environmental one, as over 2000 tonnes of fuel must be pumped out of the Concordia to avoid a huge oil spill. Members of Parliament's Transport committee debated the issue with Commissioner Siim Kallas on Tuesday.

Regional Seminar at Europe House Valletta
On July 1 and 2, the first in a series of three regional seminars on Europe's New Mediterranean Reality: Migration and Asylum in Malta, Greece and Cyprus, kicked-off in Valletta
European Parliament Lux Prize 2010
The Valletta EPIO held the screenings of the three finalist films of the Lux Prize 2010 last week on three successive evenings (24, 25, 26 May). The film nights brought to a close the Europe Day 2011 events in Malta.
Parliamentary Debate at the House of Representatives
Europe Day in Malta was celebrated with marching bands, young Maltese challenging sitting politicians on European themes, and hundreds of children polishing their European geography on a massive interactive map on Valletta's main square. The activities organised by the European Parliament Information Office in Malta and the European Commission Representation followed the traditional European Parliament Football Festival organised in Gozo last week and coincided with similar activities across Europe.
