Welcome to the European Parliament Office in Malta
Dear Visitor,
Maltese citizens are accustomed to easy access to their national MPs who live and legislate close by.
Distance to Strasbourg and Brussels as well as the complexities of the EU make easy access to the European Parliament and its Members more of a challenge. That is where the Valletta Office of the European Parliament comes in. Through the events we organize, the information we diffuse and the debate we generate our Office seeks to bridge the gap between the Maltese and the EP.
We try to bridge the gap physically by every year sending dozens of journalists and students to Strasbourg and Brussels to better understand the Institution. We try to bridge the gap intellectually by organizing public information events including fairs, seminars and civil fora, communicating through TV, Radio the print media as well as this website.
Malta's voter participation rate for the 2009 EP Elections was an excellent 80% - the highest of any EU Member State were voting is not compulsory.
We voted because we knew that the laws and decisions taken by the EP have a direct impact on our lives. Those powers give us as citizens a democratic right to know what is being done in our name. The EP Office in Valletta and this website are part of the effort to ensure that this right it up-held.
Welcome to your website.
